An escaped prisoner tried to escape police by diving through a second-floor window above a London street today. Police grabbed the man as he jumped through the window in Chippenham Road, Paddington and struggled for nearly 20 minutes to stop him falling 40 feet. A police inspector grabbed the man, 21-year-old David Lees, as he made his bid for freedom. Two more policemen, PC Stephen Price and Station Sergt Bert Smith joined in the struggle while a call was sent to the fire brigage. The struggle ended when firemen put a ladder up to the window and Sgt. "Dusty" Miller climbed up to Lees and pulled him to safety.
