Music: 03 Yenya's Return

Introduction

Yenya's Return is based upon an episode in 'The House by the Dvina’ (A Russian Childhood) by Eugenie Fraser. (Corgi Books, 1984). It was written with a school orchestra in mind, so there are no great musical challenges. The fake instruments of the WAV files give a good idea of tempo and mood, of course, and are not bad for what existed in technology twenty years ago.

Available on request are the individual parts for the orchestra instruments; horns, clarinets, flutes, oboes, trumpests, tombones, bassoon, cymbals, double bass, sleigh bells, timpani, triangle, viola, violin and cello.

Passing Titan (Outward Journey – Welcome – Titan – Farewell): Tone Poem for Synthesiser (5.05)

Passing Titan is a piece of "musique concrète", which is to say a piece of music created by synthesisers and digital signal processing. It is considered finished and unchangeable. Unlike conventional music, therefore, it needs no performer, no interpreter.

Music: 12 Christmas Pastoral (Organ or Trio)

Introduction

Ideal solos for providing an interlude between sung carols for any occasion, as well as for setting the scene or for accompanying some action or procession in school Nativity plays and other such events.

The pastorale is particularly effective in creating the right atmosphere on such occasions, because inherent in the pastorale genre is the evocation of that idyllic world of shepherds lazing around in the shade of trees, playing their pipes across rolling valleys. This is why they are always in a rather lazy 6/8 time, similar to a siciliana in rhythm, and typically with a drone bass and a melody exclusively in 3rds and 6ths.
